From the Vice President:
2023 BIA Reunion Update
Well shipmates, it’s Signed, Sealed and Delivered! Our reunion contract, that is...with the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel. The address is 777 Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510. Visit the website at norfolksheraton.com.
Mark your calendars and start planning now to attend our 2023 Reunion from
Monday, Sept. 25-Friday, Sept. 29, 2023. The Sheraton is on the waterfront, across from the old city of Portsmouth, the USCG Base and at the center of numerous activities and venues. A passenger ferry and harbor tour cruise boats tie up adjacent to the hotel. Walking paths to restaurants, shops and historic ships are in front of the lobby.
After reviewing numerous lodging options in the area, the Sheraton was selected because of its location and use as a hub for our activities and tours. Once on site, there is no need to take a shuttle to the waterfront.... we’ll already be there! When we do take our group tours, our days will end with time to enjoy your favorite beverage sitting in the waterfront park. Can’t beat that!
The Sheraton has a great reputation from the many military reunions they’ve hosted. Our group rate is $139/room + $23.85 in taxes per night. The hotel will honor this rate the Sunday prior to and Friday night after our reunion. The current rate for these rooms varies from $169 to over $300/night + taxes.
Covered parking on-site is $15/night. When we considered inflationary costs that are affecting everything and realize that we’ve been able to anchor this rate for an event over one year from now, including a hospitality room, the decision became much easier.
Also, for the first time in our reunion planning, we’ve decided to utilize the services of Armed Forces
Reunions (AFR) to take care of registration fees, create attendance rosters, name tags, programs, collect tour fees, and provide registration packets, etc.
We’ll be able to register online and pay by credit card (3.5% fee) or check (no fee). Charley at AFR has been very helpful in guiding me and providing critical location and venue information for each reunion that I’ve coordinated since becoming your VP. AFR’s home port is Norfolk, which has already proved invaluable in decisions our Board has made. You’ll receive more information about payment and registration through AFR this Fall.
When I think of the countless hours dedicated to each reunion’s success by our treasurer Ralf and his wife Freida...for YEARS... as they’ve coordinated registrations, created our packets and printed everything we’ve grown accustomed to. All I can say is It’s TIME TO GIVE THEM A BREAK! Bravo Zulu!!! Ralf and Frieda. Ralf will coordinate all finances and registration info with AFR.
Looking forward to renewing old friendships and starting some new ones-
Doug “(Huck) Huckins Vice President, Burton Island Association
