Dr. Robert Bunes just published a book with a fair bit of history of Antarctic exploration as well as a memoir of his DF 69-70 cruise on the Glacier. I bought it because I knew him at that time and it is a good book. The Glacier encountered a lot of problems . Hull perforation by a berg, stuck in the ice in the Weddell Sea with a winter over expected, a fire on board that took three hours to put out. As the physician he did a life saving bit of work there. And, of course, the storms of the Drake Passage.
His Captain chose to not stop for any liberty port (except Punta Arenas for resupply). Our cruise had a fine skipper in Capt. McLean and XO of Cdr. James Fournier.
I just wanted you all to know of the book's existence as there is not much info available from Coast Guard icebreaking experiences except maybe official documents.
It's called "Wind, Fire and Ice".
All the best to all of you.
